Co-Op Model

Welcome to the Sunnyside Parent Cooperative, where parents actively participate in their children's care and education.

Sunnyside began as a co-op 40 years ago at a time when the notion and essence of a cooperative was historically different than now. Over the years, the cooperative aspects of Sunnyside have undergone multiple transformations, each reflecting the particular needs and skills of the staff, parents, directors, and Center. As families cycle through the Center, the notion of the parent co-op continues to evolve, and the Board of Directors welcomes your input and inspiration.

Like all early childhood centers, Sunnyside invests mosts of its resources in people: the teachers who make this education possible.  To keep our costs as low as possible, we have created the co-op as a way for parents to become involved in constructive work that benefits the center, and eliminates the need to hire help for certain tasks.

As a part of the enrollment contract, every family commits to working 16 hours per year at Sunnyside. (This commitment is halved for single families.) The school provides multiple opportunities for involvement. From grocery shopping to working on the grounds, childcare during meetings to serving on the Board of Directors, there is something for everyone.
